When Ends Don't Meet

Using an innovative assets-based approach the Thrive project in Stockton has found how people experiencing poverty survive.

By analysing what type of assets people either possess or lack, and the ways in which they use those assets, we have built up a detailed picture of 24 households in Thornaby on Teeside. The research has also made clear some of the gaps between people’s needs and the provision of public services. It has also identified significant differences between the ways in which women and men both accumulate and use a range of assets. It is clear that in various ways women are disadvantaged in the process of sustaining a livelihood in this way and are thus more likely to be living in poverty.
