Government promotes debt advice services

The Ministry of Justice has announced a range of schemes encouraging people with money problems to get advice and support.

Debt is an increasing problem for many people

  • In county courts, people at risk of being evicted from their home as a result of possession proceedings can get advice and support. There are also posters with details of free debt advice services.
  • Plans are being implemented which will require creditors to inform their debtors how to contact them to discuss any problems, and to provide details of independent free advice providers, before taking legal action.
  • Judges may also be given the power to issue Enforcement Relief Orders, giving people who have temporary financial difficulties a short break from repaying a debt where there is clear evidence that their circumstances will improve within a short period.

This is welcome news, as the credit crunch means that more  and more people will be trapped in a poverty cycle by unpayable debts.

Join CAP's Debt On Our Doorstep campaign to call for better access to sustainable credit and financial advice.
