Politicians and economists have called for a 'paradigm shift' in response to the credit crunch. The unprecedented circumstances of the current global recession provide a unique opportunity for dialogue between theology, ethics and economics as we appraise economic life today. This conference is a contribution to that discussion.
Speakers include:
- Stephen Green, who is Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings plc and an ordained minister in the Church of England.
- Guy Treweek, who is Assistant Curate of St Peter, Black Lion Lane, Hammersmith. Before ordination he worked in the City as a fund manager.
- Philip Goodchild, who is Professor of Religious Studies and Head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham.
- Catherine Cowley, Associate Director of the Heythrop Institute, with Peter Oppenheimer, student of Christ Church Oxford and President of the Oxford Centre of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and Tarek El Diwany, editor of Islamic Finance, discussing usury in the 21st century.
- Revd Dr Malcolm Brown, Director of Mission and Public Affairs for the Church of England.
- Michael Northcott, Professor of Ethics at the University of Edinburgh and an ordained Anglican Priest, a trustee of the Fair Trade organisation Traidcraft, Honorary Canon of Liverpool Cathedral and Fellow of the Centre for Human Ecology.
- Valpy Fitzgerald, Professor of International Development at Oxford University.
- Kathryn Tanner, Dorothy Grant Maclear Professor of Theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School.
This promises to be a thought-provoking conference.
