Get Fair
Get Fair is the campaign to eradicate poverty in the UK. Supported by over 45 national churches and charities, it aims to focus public and political attention on ending UK poverty, by:
- stimulating more informed public debate;
- increasing the numbers of people willing to campaign on UK poverty;
- pressing the political parties to make specific commitments to ending poverty in their General Election manifestos.
The campaign will be publicly launched on 11-12 September, and also includes the End Child Poverty national rally in Westminster on 4 October. See www.getfair.org.uk for more information.
Voices from the Edge: Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2009
The first ever Poverty and Homelessness Action Week at the end of January 2008 was a huge success - with over 120 local events taking place during the week. The sponsoring organisations - Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice and Scottish Churches Housing Action - are already working on plans for next year's Action Week (31 January - 8 February 2009): Voices from the Edge.
We are working in partnership with the Actors for Human Rights network to produce a dramatic performance - Poverty Monolgues - which will tell the everyday stories of people's experiences of struggling with poverty and homelessness in the UK.
The play will be suitable to be performed in a wide range of places, spaces and sizes - from the use of short extracts in other events through to full theatrical performances. Some performances will feature professional actors (free of charge), but we hope that many more will be put on by local groups using resources and guidance which we will prepare.
What the briefing will cover
The briefing will provide you with more information about:
- how to organise a simple local media-focused event to coincide with the Get Fair launch in September;
- the End Child Poverty "Keep the Promise" rally on 4 October;
- how to get involved in Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2009, including handy hints for putting on a local performance of Poverty Monologues.
