Despite empowerment rising up the political agenda, there remain fundamental tensions at the heart of our political institutions. As inequalities between the richest and poorest in society continue to widen, citizens in English-speaking nations are now twice as likely as their European counterparts to suffer mental illness. Can we shake ourselves from this Affluenza and return to the ideals of egalitarianism and democracy that can truly empower?

The lecture will be given by the distinguished author, broadcaster and psychologist Oliver James. One of the most insightful and free-thinking writers of our time, Oliver has been described as being "guaranteed to make you think more deeply than ever". He provided "blue skies thinking" to Jack Straw whilst he was Home Secretary and now performs a similar role for the Conservative Party.
