KESTER ASPDEN speaking about his book The Hounding of David Oluwale
IAN DUHIG (TS Eliot Prize nominee) and ROMMI SMITH (Parliamentary Writer in Residence) reading their poems in memory of David Oluwale
David Oluwale was found drowned in the River Aire in 1969.
He had arrived in Hull in 1949, having stowed away in a ship
from Nigeria. He lived in Leeds thereafter, spending 10 years
in High Royds Psychiatric Hospital and sleeping rough in the
city centre for another six years of his troubled life. Two Leeds
police officers were acquitted of his murder, but imprisoned
for assaulting him. The David Oluwale Memorial Committee
believes that Leeds must remember its past and must create
a future in which all of its citizens, whatever their colour or
status, have a dignified life with equal rights and justice. In
this positive spirit, we aim to create a memorial for David in
the city centre. We seek your support.
Entrance is free but a collection will be taken.
