Professor Tim Jackson, Sustainable Development Commission
In the face of this unprecedented economic crisis, it is important for faith communities to reflect on the many challenges that we are now faced with – and which are likely to have profound impacts on families, communities, jobs, housing, financial services and wider economies.
The conference will bring together people of faith engaged at all levels within the churches and other faith communities, in responding to the economic crisis – and in particular to examine the following questions:
- What are the immediate and longer-term impacts of the economic crisis for those directly affected?
- Do we need to fundamentally rethink our idea of prosperity?
- What can be done to build a more just, equal and sustainable society and economy in future?
- What positive contribution can faith communities make?
The keynote speakers will include:
- Ann Pettifor. Ann is best known for her leadership of the global Jubilee 2000 campaign to cancel the debts of the poorest countries. In 2006, in The Coming First World Debt Crisis, she correctly predicted the global credit crunch. In 2008, she co-authored the Green New Deal.
- Tim Jackson. Tim is Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey, and since 2004 has been a member of the Sustainable Development Commission, for whom he wrote Prosperity without Growth? – The transition to a sustainable economy, published in March 2009.
- Cathy McCormack. Cathy is a campaigner who lives in Easterhouse, Glasgow. In January, Cathy published The Wee Yellow Butterfly, the inspiring story of how, from unpromising beginnings, she has spent her life committed to seeking justice and finding fulfillment.
