Our values

Church Action on Poverty was founded as a response to rising poverty and injustice, based on Christian values.

  • We believe in justice: freedom from oppression, equality, hope for a better and a fairer world.
  • We believe in our common humanity: we are all made in the image of God and therefore all people are of intrinsic equal value; we believe in inclusivity, respect and care for others, and responsibility.
  • We believe in people exercising power: we affirm people’s inherent power to generate solutions to the problems they face; to have their own voice, ownership and power, and a right to learning.
  • We believe in speaking truth to power: naming, fighting and challenging injustice, being prophetic and holding power accountable.
  • We believe in active listening: establishing trust, and valuing people’s unique contribution and voice.
  • We believe in commitment: going the extra mile, long-term commitment to communities, seeing it through and seeing change happen.

    Our practices

  • We believe in equity and fairness in all we do, and do not tolerate oppression in the workplace.
  • We believe in the work we do to create a more just society.
  • We are one team, who succeed or fail together. We support each other and work together.
  • We embrace and utilise our staff’s  diversity of skills, experience, background, motivation and values.
  • We foster positive and honest communication where all voices are heard, and where we treat each other with respect.
  • We voice our own truths. By speaking up for ourselves we are exercising power.
  • All staff deserve to be respected as individuals and equals. A management structure is not a hierarchy of importance. We recognise that each staff member makes a valuable contribution and generates ideas and solutions.
  • All staff can expect to receive good quality support and supervision from their manager, be involved in decisions that affect them, and have access to clear and open procedures.
  • We work with anybody who is in sympathy with our values. Staff members may belong to any faith or none.
  • Staff are encouraged to join a trade union, and we have a staff representative mandated to support all staff.
  • We are a Living Wage employer.
